In a remarkable demonstration of career growth and passion for aviation, 34 employees from various departments across the airline have taken the bold step of transitioning to the light deck, pursuing a new role as pilots through the airBaltic Pilot Academy. For them, what once may have felt like a dream is now becoming a reality!
Among these career changers, 20 were previously cabin crew members who, after years of working at 36,000 feet, decided it was time to change perspective. But that’s not all – employees from the marketing, maintenance, IT, engineering, ground operations, and quality auditing departments have also embarked on this new adventure, showcasing the diverse talent pool within the airline and the strength of its internal development programmes.
One inspiring story comes from Luiza Platonova, who spent seven years working in the Technical Department, moving from the position of production planner to maintenance planner and even working night shifts as a mechanic. Her childhood dream of becoming a pilot was sparked by living not far from the runway in Babite, listening to the roar of jet engines every morning. Years later, thanks to the opportunity provided by airBaltic, she’s finally living that dream. ‘I’m very pleased with my life choice,’ she shares. ‘The sunrise and sunset from the cockpit are magical, and the technical background I gained still helps me today. I may not change tyres anymore, but I understand the systems behind the scenes – and that makes me a better pilot.’
Former cabin crew member Rolands Fukss began his pilot training in 2018. After two years of study, he earned his wings and today fies Airbus A220-300 aircraft while also mentoring the next generation of pilots as an instructor at the airBaltic Pilot Academy. ‘The transition wasn’t easy,’ Fukss admits, ‘but my experience with passengers and cabin operations gave me a unique edge. Now, I help future pilots take their first steps – just like I once did.’
